Gerrit Jan Wielinga wrote this debut in 2006, ten years after he seemed to be dying of AIDS at twenty-five. By then his life had 'normalised'. He had a job at a communications agency, wrote short stories and chased after men. A perfectly good life. Then came a (secret) affair with one Maurice, who was already in a relationship with Bas. Maurice decided he had to choose, and chose his old, comfortable life with Bas.
Left utterly bewildered, Wielinga suddenly knew what his first book would be about. He worked day and night on Shadowland to capture the essence of this obsessive infatuation, sparing himself nothing.
Shadowland is the account of a man trying to channel intense feelings of love for another (impossible) man. He does this in an ironic, tragicomic way. Written in a brisk, experimental style, Shadowland is a small monument to the baggage (and the emotional bullshit) you carry with you the next time you fall in love.
GJ Wielinga (1971) grew up amid cows and churches in the northeast of Friesland, a fiercely independent province of the Netherlands. He has been living and working in Amsterdam since 1992. In addition to being a writer, Wielinga is also an artist and campaigner.
