Great Read!!

I also received this book as a Christmas gift. I can not believe how incredibly good this author is. I am difficult to buy for because I am such a critical reader. But THIS book kept me glued to the pages. It was so rivoting, I could not put it down. I predict a movie. Thanks sis for a great present. I recommend it highly to anyone who likes nonfiction narrative.

Shadow Chasers: The Woolfolk Tragedy Revisited

This is an incredible book. From the first page until the last I was literally caught up in the story. I felt like I was there. I am astounded that I have never heard of this author, Carolyn DeLoach, or that she has never written anything before. Until you read the book, you can not imagine what I am talking about. She transports you back into a time and place--deep South, 1887 when nine members (including young children) of a popular southern family are slaughtered. You feel it, you see it, you can even smell it. The incredible thing is I had never heard of this murder and I am an avid murder mystery reader. How come Lizzie Borden is so well known and the Woolfolk murders and trials in Georgia is not? Is it because when they realized they hung an innocent man they tried to 'forget'? Shadow Chasers is a true story, well documented and well researched. DeLoach captured the horror, the hysteria, the sadness. I highly recommend it to ALL history buffs and to mystery lovers.

Incredible story

I just finished Shadow Chasers and can not stop thinking about it. The author did a wonderful job with her character development. Her research into this case was impressive. I went to my local library and got the 1887 microfilm of our newspaper. Sure enough there was a front page article of the murder. Incredible!! It blew me away. Awesome story, awesome book, awesome writer. If you like history or if you like a good southern mystery then this is the book for you.

Absolutely Riveting!

Carolyn DeLoach was at the Joice Public Library in Joice, Iowa on Wednesday November 8, 2000. She spoke for 1 1/2 hours and not one of us took a breath. Ms. DeLoach had the actual murder weapon that was used on the nine members of the Woolfolk family along with many other artifacts. She is traveling around the country speaking at public libraries. If you get a chance to hear her...DO! You won't regret it. I am a murder mystery fan and read at least one a week and I consider myself a pretty good judge of them. You will not want to miss this book. It appeals to those of us who are interested in history and in mystery. Not only is the book about the Woolfold tradgedy excellant but so is the story of how Carolyn DeLoach spent 27 years of her life researching this story and the amazing way in which she came upon these discoveries. Thank you, Carolyn DeLoach!

True Tragedy

Carolyn DeLoach's Shadow Chasers: The Woolfolk Tragedy Revisited is a snapshot of the people and beliefs of the south during the late 1800s. The characters are very well developed and demonstrate our post war culture. Being accused of very gruesome murders, Tom Woolfolk held on and claimed his innocence throughout the ordeal. As the book progresses, you see him grow into a more mature and peaceful young man through his faith and the faith of others, and you witness the determination of many to condemn him to death. Before the end of the book, you feel you personally know the characters. Very moving and thought provoking story and very enjoyable reading.
