English words and their French, German, Italian, Russian, Hebrew, Portuguese and Spanish translations are given. This description may be from another edition of this product.
This dictionary offers basic words for seven of the world's most common languages in one hardcover volume. Each language has a section of words translated into English and a section translating from English into the foreign language. The dust jacket claims 12,000 to 20,000 words and phrases for each language. While I haven't counted the words, the range seems pretty comprehensive on the different parts of speech (i.e. nouns, adjectives, verbs, etc.) and offers a wide range of common words (i.e. holidays, months, country names, foods, animals, etc.). However, the drawback for the range is the small size of the print. Although most entries consist of two words--the word in foreign language and the word in English, there are some entries that indicate gender and idioms. This book may not be adequate for anyone actually studying one of the foreign languages, but overall, it is an inexpensive guide for the curious (try comparing the same word in all seven languages for similarities) or the average user who just wants to know a few words in one of the languages or who wants to translate foreign words seen in a novel or heard on TV.
