Max Lucado's first book that journeys from the birth of Christ to His resurrection. Drawing from his classic writing on Jesus combined with new reflections and breathtaking art, Max Lucado again opens our eyes--and hearts--to the life and work of the Savior in a way that will change lives forever. "Jesus was, at once, common and ? alternately normal and heroic. One minute blending in with the domino players in the park, the next commanding the hell out of madmen, disease out of the dying, and death out of the dead." Who was this man who spoke as easily with kids and fishermen as widows and waves? It is the question that has echoed down through the centuries to us today, and here is a visually stunning book that answers aspects of that question.
Everyone knows the story of Jesus (hopefully they do anyway), but the author puts forth the story in a way that is easier to read than if you read it straight from the bible. It makes you think of the different points of view from the biblical characters . For instance...what were people thinking of Mary, pregnant but unwed when she rode up to the inn and was refused a room? What was Jesus like as a child and growing up? Did he have girlfriends? For 33 years, he was the same as us, could feel the same as us, did he have pimples, colds, a girl friend? Questions we never considered but which makes us think of Jesus as more real as a person for some reason. Then the day came for Jesus to leave Nazareth. The author says, "The day he left Nazareth is the day he declared his devotion to you and me." I'm sure Jesus would have loved to stay in the safe, cozy town and help Joseph build a carpentry business, but that wasn't his call in life. The author then describes his mission in life in a way that modern people today can understand it. Jesus is tempted in the wilderness in the first section. He wanders in the wilderness for 40 days being tempted by the devil. Jesus' survival weapon of choice was Scripture. The story covers the story of how Jesus made water into wine for the wedding. The lesson being that if you take your problem to Jesus, he will help you if you do what he says. There are stories like this throughout the entire book but they are told simply and in a way that will make you sit up and take notice. This would make a great gift for the new Christian or for anyone who just loves to read the story of how Jesus came to be and how he died for us. A beautiful book in a slipcover case. Wonderful illustrations, boards feel padded and quality material.
The Best of Lucado's Writing on Jesus
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 17 years ago
His Name is Jesus is a substantive, colorful collection of Max Lucado's writings on Jesus' life, death and resurrection. The book culls from 20 previously published Lucado books (1990-2007) to provide biographical content for this new book on Jesus. Lucado's writing is always inspiring, imaginative and instructive. This "best of" writing really does bring out the best of his books, and it is all about Jesus. The format of the book is rewarding, too. Every page is colorful and artful. Several pages have full page photographs appropriate to the verbage on that page. I think more than anything this book is devotional. It would serve very well as a daily mediation on Jesus. Although this book is beautifully crafted, the last thing it should be is just decorative. It would make a great gift book, and one that I would hope would be well-used and not just well-placed. I had read a few of the book's culled for His Name is Jesus, but reading the words in this new format was like reading them anew. Lucado opens readers eyes to the truths of Jesus and our place with him. Craig Stephans, author of Shakespeare On Spirituality: Life-Changing Wisdom from Shakespeare's Plays

Beautiful Book, Both Outside and Inside, With a Faint Aroma of Grapes
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 17 years ago
This presentation-quality book is a joy to read, from its gorgeous slip-cover case, to its rich illustrations. And, am I crazy, but did I detect the faint odor of grapes inside this book which has images of bunches of grapes on the endpapers? I'm not kidding here--three members of my family actually noted the faint aroma of grapes as they leafed through the book. I wonder if this is some unbelievably clever scratch-and-sniff-technology at play here, or if we're all crazy here in my household. The text consists of meditations, observations, poetry and little homilies about the life of Christ. The background illustrations are beautiful to behold. The style is light and contemplative, for a modern readership with modern challenges, and the invitation is for the reader to find present-day meaning in the life of Jesus of Nazareth. The level of insight doesn't approach A Year with C. S. Lewis: Daily Readings from His Classic Works or All These Things Shall Give Thee Experience, but they are very nicely presented. In this day and age it is a delight to find something as uplifting and unabashedly positive as this book. The message, ministry and Atonement of Jesus Christ is as necessary today as at any time in history.
Elegant book for gifts and meditations

This book is impressive when you hold it in your hands. It's not very large for a hardback, but it's got a good weight to it. It's stored in a beautiful case that slides off. Inside, the pages are full of prose, poetry and contemplations about the life of Jesus. The pages are beautiful to look at, with words artfully and poetically arranged along with regular prose. The backgrounds often include beautiful aspects of nature. As you read, you learn about the life of Jesus and what it meant to the people of his time. It's written in a modern style that could be read easily. There are comparisons to modern life to give more perspective. It's really a wonderful book to read before going to bed and can refocus your life to what's most important instead of the everyday mechanics of living. You could also read it during family devotionals or on the Sabbath after church. It's a real treat to read something uplifting versus the anti-religious material constantly being pushed on everyone. Jesus is my Savior and I love hearing of his perfect example to me, and need all the help I can get to focus on that and live a good life. This book would make a beautiful gift for someone.
