I'm not from Manitoba but my family is from Montana and they too were homesteaders. The book gives a vivid picture of the isolation and difficulties faced by our Scandinavian immigrant ancestors. This is a must-read for all descendents of these sad, brave people. That the book was banned by churches in the mid-1920s because of its scandalous contents, allows insight into cultural change over the past ninety years.

I grew up in Northern Manitoba where most of the book is based in.It is interesting to ready how things were like back then. I can totaly relate to the characters in the book. I think though the end should have had Niels and Ellen kiss.
