Expect the Unexpected

I’m totally blown away by this series, and when I received the advance copy of Set in Stone, I started reading and didn’t stop until it was finished. Book four of The True Lies of Rembrandt Stone picks up right where book three left off. Rem’s former life is still gone, but he’s with Eve, so that’s a plus. Of course, if you’ve followed the series, you know the tragedy he’s experienced and while he knows he’s not supposed to change the past, he wants to fix the disaster that’s happened. In book three, Rem’s trying to solve a cold case involving a serial killer who’s killed thirty-eight women. This storyline continues in Set in Stone. Just as in past books, there are more twists and turns that keep you constantly guessing about what will happen next. One problem Rem is facing this time is his time-traveling mechanism is missing. If he can’t find the watch, he’s got to make peace with the timeline he’s in, but even though things could be worse, he wants his old life back, the one he didn’t appreciate when he had it. There’s a ton of action and Rem and Eve just get better and better. All the key secondary characters are back and add real depth to the continuing saga. I’m totally invested in these characters and want everything to work out for them all. Just like the other books, Set in Stone ends with a shocking cliffhanger. It will rock your time-traveling world for sure. That’s all I can say. I’m sitting on pins and needles awaiting book five. This is such an awesome series.

incredible and totally unpredictable

"There will always be storms, Rem. But we can't live in fear of them, We weather them. We get stronger. And then we get back up and go on in the beauty of a new sunrise." Oh my word. This book. It kept me up quite late into the night and had me dreaming about the characters even after I finished the book. When I didn't think anything more could be thrown in Rem's way, I am proven wrong. Again. This adventure is a bit different since Rem gets to stay in one timeline and it gets really (really) interesting since our time traveler is now stuck in one timeline with only one life to live well. The story is absolutely unpredictable and thus extremely exciting; Rem's conversational tone brings us into his center of being and lets us experience these "curve balls and boomerangs"of his life right next to him. There is a lot of untangling of emotions and truths from Rem's heart in this one. His first person voice is still witty and engaging with his self-deprecating humor but a little softer, a little more thoughtful, and definitely more mature. We see so much of Rem's insecurities, heart, and soul as a father and husband in this book. The Jackson case is still open in this timeline but melding of memories from different timelines and clues from this timeline help Rem better understand the murderer they're chasing. But so many things.....so many unpredictable things push Rem to a new low of desperation and I'm not sure how or where we will find him in the next book. It's such an incredible book that feels like a turning point in the series. It's book 4 and the series must be read in order to fully enjoy Rem's time travels. If you like action-packed, adrenaline-filled crime-fighting fiction with a dose of time travel, you will absolutely love this book and series.
