In December 2007, in its "Resolution on Safeguarding the Sovereignty, Territorial Integrity, and Constitutional Order of the Republic of Serbia," the Serbian National Assembly declared the country's military neutrality with respect to existing alliances. Nevertheless, given its geostrategic position in the region and its potential role in Euro-Atlantic and Russian geopolitical frameworks, Serbia may be called upon to clarify its strategic positioning in the Balkans. This is all the more true given that Belgrade has been negotiating with Brussels since January 2014 regarding its accession to the European Union. It is therefore highly likely that Russia, on the one hand, and NATO and the EU, on the other, will attempt in the future to definitively draw the country into their respective spheres of influence. Serbia would thus find itself forced to put an end to its age-old dilemma between East and West. Throughout its history, the country has balanced its relations among the various powers operating in the Balkans, while taking care to defend its national interests as best it could. So, what might Serbia's strategic future hold?
