The call of love and war in Britain's darkest hour
Summer, 1939. The storm clouds of war spill a raft of secrets. Five friends, from families of good standing, are gathered at the palatial Sommerton Hall on the north Norfolk coast. Cecilia Rose holds a torch for her childhood friend, and son of Lord Sommerton, Edward de Grey whilst beautiful seductress Vivian Heigham toys with James Montgomery, a Spanish Civil War veteran. Meanwhile Geoffrey Blyth, of nearby Weybourne Hall, is hiding a secret that could prove more damaging than the war itself.
As their privileged lives unravel, we walk with them through their darkest hours. Edward defends Britain from the air, whilst Cecilia throws herself into a dangerous and demanding life on the Home Front. As her friends struggle with losing lovers, a tempestuous relationship puts the hall in danger and changes lives forever. From the barley fields of Norfolk to daylight raids on Norwich - will the sunlit uplands of the past ever return?
In September's Song listen as Cecilia tells you her story, and follow the call of love and war in Britain's darkest hour...
M. K. Crane lives near Norwich, Norfolk in England - a short distance from where many of the scenes in the book are set. "I've resurrected the ghosts of wartime East Anglia," the author explains, "and placed characters in the grand houses that pepper the landscape. Beneath big, Norfolk skies they play out their passions, struggles, heartaches and victories."
