The best friendships don't seem to have a beginning, and promise to last forever. When we are very lucky, we have friendships that last a lifetime. Matilda and Tessie were always friends, and were always going to be friends until life got in the way. Growing up, health problems, and careers were not going to push them apart. As Matilda's health declines, Tessie will do whatever it takes to keep her happy and healthy, including mild burglary and contemplating murder. Thinking about death doesn't seem to bother Matilda too much. Instead of worrying she tries to enjoy life while she has it, and do whatever she likes on a whim. This apathetic ideal only drives Tessie crazy.
