sensory secrets how to jump start learning in children

Of everything that I've read this is the best book. Its a fairly quick read. It's broken down into very specific catigories. It gives you warning signs. It tells you how to work on a problem with professionals. It shows you hundreds of ways to work on each specific sensory motor problem. It also helps you to evaluate your own child and explains how certain holes in the learning foundation could quickly lead to learning diviculties later on in life (early grade school). If you feel that there is a problem with your child and you can't put your finger on it - this is the book that will give you invaluable stepping stones.

easy to understand

Sometimes books on the sensory systems are a hard read for non Occupational Therapists. This book was easy to follow with great examples of what to do to help with certain problem areas. I bought one and bought a second one for my son's teacher! I think the book is very helpful, hit vital points and actually made sense. I highly recommend it for a good read on sensory issues.

A must-have resource for any pediatric professional

As a pediatric occupational therapist with a doctorate in private practice, I am continuously searching for resources for my clients who are desperately seeking information on sensory integration. I have found that Sensory Secrets is a great introductory resource especially for those families who are learning about sensory integration for the first time. They need a starting place, a way to fit all of the information they are being given about their child into the context of their own lives. This is a must-have resource for any pediatric professional to help guide families to a deeper understanding about their own child.

A Must For Parents of Learning Disable Children

I was very anxious to read this book and found that I could not put it down until I had completed it. I discovered things that described my child--things for which I had never had a complete understanding nor adequate words to describe. For example, I have always been very frustrated with my child's eating habits, not realizing that there was an actual sensory and neurological connection. Yes, I knew learning disabled children were sometimes picky eaters. I did not understand, however, why they might be a picky eaters. Nor did I understand that there were exercises to possibly resolve such problems. It has been several years since my child was formally evaluated by our school's occupational therapist since he does not receive the services now of an OT. I had pondered what his growth in this area was or even if there had been growth. While it does not constitute a formal evaluation, the fold-out chart at the back of the book was extraordinarly useful in providing for me an idea of where my child stood. Moreover, I had a meeting at school the next day after my reading of Sensory Secrets, to discuss with a new teacher some problems we were having on accomodations. I was able to take the chart from Sensory Secrets along with information in the book and use it to discribe my child and why certain items on testing were problems and why specific accomodations were necessary. The book and chart have provided a way for me to give a professional opinion that I as aparent was not able to convey with authority. This book is a must to have in your file as a reference. Without reservations, I recommend it.

It's no secret that "Sensory Secrets: How to jump-start learning in children" is a great resource for parents or teachers dealing with children with autisim. It is an eye appealing, easy to read book with many ideas on how to allow children to achieve success through sensory intergration. Being a high school autistic teacher, I was able to incoorporate ideas from this book in my classroom with great success. I recommend this book as a wonderful guide to sensory intergration.
