A bold new book...

Literature in all its varied forms attempts many things; however, there are precious few young adult novels that attempt more than mere lip service when addressing today's teens and the challenges they face daily. "Senioritis" does not shy from the harsh reality of our nation's youth. It is an edgy work that mines the depths of troubled teens' consciousness, spitting out what is found for all the world to see, shedding light on situations often left in that dark cellar of political correctness. Mr. Thompson has a fine ear for the language and dialogue of 21st century teens. While some authors become detached from the reality of their own writings, allowing themselves to veer off into the tepid waters of mediocrity, Thompson, through his daily interaction with teens of every race and background, tells an emotional tale of disenchanted and distressed youths who ultimately may find redemption. With its inventive arrangement of chapters-a looping series of seven narrators pushing the story forward-one will find themselves reading at a furious pace.As can be noted from previous posts, this novel is not without its share of controversy and detractors. As a librarian and an avid supporter of fiction that dares to turn conventional storytelling on its head, I whole heartedly recommend this title for public high schools across this land and beyond.

Best Young Adult Book Written!

I believe that this book has been one of the best written young adult books ever! The author is very talented and seems to know how to grab the attention of an audience, young and old! I love how he can write a whole book full of journals from characters he's made up and make it sound as if it were from actual students! This book really shows his passion for understanding and communicating with his students! Good Luck on your future books Tate Thompson! You're going to go far as an author, you are a great writer!

WOW!!

This book was amazing in every way. I have never read a book that showed more about what teenage life is all about these days. The problems these few teenagers incountered throughout this book completely blew me away. I never would have thought a 17 year old boy could be half as brilliant as Gemini was. The author of this book is a truely amazing writer. I read about scandals I had thought only a full grown adult could handle, but these students,who were thought to be deliquents, managed to get by easily. Through much suffering and sadness along with great joy these kids learned who they really were. This books makes its reader feel as if they are in the same classroom with these students struggling to figure out where to go next in their lives. I felt like I was apart of their lives, in their world while I read. I couldn't put this book down once.

Senioritis

Senioritis is a wonderful read. It has characters that will find their way into your heart. You will feel what the characters feel and will most likely identify with at least one of the characters in the book. It was sad, funny, and made me think back to when I was a senior in high school and the relationships I had back then. If you want a book that will toy with your emotions and is a quick read, this book is it. I highly recommend it. It's worth your time.

Awesome Young Adult Novel! Nothing else quite like it!

Senioritis is a young adult novel that will actually resonate with teenage readers. Capturing the diverse voices of a group of discontent teenagers, Thompson explores the very real problems of today's high schoolers. Unlike a lot of young adult novels, which only dance on the edge of serious issues, this novel directly addresses sex, depression, racism, abusive boyfriends, and disappointment in hypocritical adults. The novel pulls no punches in dealing with these issues, yet ultimately celebrates the amazing resilience of today's youth. With seven narrative voices coming together to tell a fast-paced story, everyone will find a character to identify with. Each of these narrators must successfully complete the after-school program in order to graduate, but this is only a starting point for all the internal strife and external drama that engulfs the students as they begin to move beyond high school and into a new world where they must discover their own values and voices. From Nakiesha--a sistah with serious attitude--to the intellectual Gemini--who sits in a desk "pondering the ramifications of my recent juvenile impulsiveness"--these are all characters who immediately jump off of the page and into the reader's heart. As a lover of young adult fiction, I was thrilled to find a book that actually captures the voices of real young people--black and white, male and female. This is quite an accomplishment by Tate Thompson, and Senioritis is a book to be read, read again, and shared with friends. You will love it!!!
