A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK -NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - An achingly beautiful work of historical fiction that moves between Germany on the eve of World War II and present-day Wisconsin, unspooling a thread of love, longing, and the powerful bonds of family. -A TODAY SHOW #ReadWithJenna BOOK CLUB PICK! Based on the author's own family letters, Send for Me tells the story of Annelise, a young woman in prewar Germany. Growing up working at her parents' popular bakery, she's always imagined a future full of delicious possibilities. Despite rumors that anti-Jewish sentiment is on the rise, Annelise and her parents can't quite believe that it will affect them; they're hardly religious. But as she falls in love, marries, and gives birth to her daughter, the dangers grow closer. Soon Annelise and her husband are given the chance to leave for America, but they must go without her parents, whose future and safety are uncertain. Two generations later in a small Midwestern city, Annelise's granddaughter, Clare, is a young woman newly in love. But when she stumbles upon a trove of the letters her great-grandmother wrote from Germany after Annelise's departure, she sees the history of her family's sacrifices in a new light, leading her to question whether she can still honor the past while planning for her future.
OMG ! What a BEAUTIFULLY written, and told story..that stays with you ..long after you've finished the book ! It is written with such elegance..but yet..so down to earth ! There were so many parts ..as a Mother..with an only daughter..that I can relate to..it was like "Are you listening in to our conversations " !!! 😁 Its a story of Family love..and the hope the parents hold for their only daughter and new son in law and baby granddaughter to leave the hell of Germany before they couldn't !! The ABSOLUTE HEARTBREAKING Goodbyes...their internal thoughts and feelings...reminiscing of different holidays, conversations, dinners, having to leave...but With Hope in their hearts that they too.. will be reunited with their children in America ! The story is 3 generations..all within that one little family unit. The daughter and husband that left..her Parents that were left in Germany...and the part in the end is the little girl..who is now the 70 yr old mother..with HER only daughter...and they are all connected..through the Great Grandparents and and the Past..no matter how bitter/sweet it turned out . It's about the generational LOVE we carry with us..from one generation to the next..about people in our Families that we don't even know..other than through pictures ..and old wonderful stories...handed down to our children...and and their children..and the next....hopefully..forever ! It's a story of heartbreak and love and loss...so Beautifully done ! I highly recommend this lovely heartful story..which in True Fact..is part of the Authors Great Grandparents lives ...and the letters her Great Grandmother shared with her daughter that left for America with her husband and 2 yr old daughter ! How wonderful it is this author... has these letter from Generations..written Sooo long ago...written in German a language she doesn't know..that she had to have translated to her....and was able to build them into this Lovely, Beautiful, thought provoking Novel that is All of 5 stars and more !!! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟❣ EXCELLENT EXCELLENT Story !
