While quarrelling with friend and fellow artist Paul Gauguin, van Gogh had a seizure during which he threatened Gauguin with a razor, leading him to sever part of his own ear.He then took the piece, in his subsequent feverish state, to the Maison de Tol rance bordello and presented it to a prostitute named Rachel.
