one of my favorite books

I like the history of religion and philosophy in Germany, written so the French could be warned to keep from being conquered by the Germans. It has some interesting ghost stories. Martin Luther and Lessing provide some backbone. Then Kant makes God somewhat remote from our direct experiences. There is also a story of a French drummer who taught Heine the history of battles when Heine was small and Napoleon had French troops quartered in the area where Heinrich Heine grew up. The history books do not record what the drums beat at such exciting times.
