Uncommon, even gripping at times -an excellent buy

I keep opening the pages of this book every once in a blue moon, knowingly, and cautiously, and keep being surprised again, taken unprepared: the thing doesn't get old that easily; worse yet: improbable phraselets and shreds stick along. Sometimes it makes me feel insecure because I cannot control what I am getting into. The book itself is an anthology of the author's life work up to the publication date: 2001. As such, it is somewhat uneven, unpredictable. Among my favorite pieces are the "African Sequence" poems, sharp as an honest knife: "... Death comes slow like a scarab. Brothers cross their doors. Flies loiter in the mortar's crumbs. Attentions are laden with eggs. Black intestines are indulged. Gods hatch. Wine turns to vinegar. Bread conceives. Prayers squat. Feet are washed with blood ..." What can I say? The guy is a real talent -supported by a masterly craftsmanship of the word. Recommended.

Marlon Fick is a real poet. In a world full of deception he has decided to stay true to himself and devote himself to write. Some of his Selected Poems are just extraordinary. You will not only enjoy this book; it will make your life better just as we expect a great book would do.

poems don't have to be long to be great. this book opens with a poem called, simply enough: "untitled"; which in itself, it perfect. old men, cathedrals, white birds...mr fick paints like dali in this poem.i read "sapho's child" i don't know how many times so far. trying to unravel it.....well...i've have abandoned that task. i feel like an intruder reading it, as if i have witnessed something so ultimately private, (and in a way, shameful), as if i crept into a mind not my own.
