'Seeking Ascension' is the second novel in the book series 'At Large in the Maze of Myth.' It continues Michael Allman's journey through a psychodrama in which he encounters people who represent eight archetypal human drives - motivating forces that exist to various degrees in each of us. These drives explain much about our individual natures, and much about the causes of interpersonal and social strife. While the first novel, 'Mining the Psyche' depicted Michael Allman's psyche in terms of people and places, the second novel finds him facing inward. He learns to deal directly with the source of his beliefs and emotions. An idea-oriented person, his inward journey is mirrored by a complicated relationship with his feeling-oriented female counterpart. His interactions with her propel the story as he comes to learn that his life purpose is to use his abilities to help her achieve her goals. Late in the story Michael Allman enters a reverie in which he experiences a stream of revelations that raise him to a higher state of mental being. The novel delves into human sexuality, the origin of fear, the structure and evolution of the psyche, and the purpose of the masculine and feminine archetypal drives. It also illustrates the role of the autonomous deeper mind and how that mysterious Source (also known as the Higher Self, the Unconscious, or personal God) can be accessed, albeit with difficulty, for guidance and self-understanding. The book ends with a description of the core ideas that underlie the book series.
