This is the story of a young woman's struggle. She lives in a farming community in Newfoundland. For some inexplicable reason, her father hates her. She survives by acting out with her dear friend Anna. They engage in many daring activities and plan to emigrate to the United States once they finish school. The story opens with Agnes in the U.S. but having lost her job. Without a job, she must face returning to Newfoundland and being subject to the harsh rule of her father.This time she would not have the loving support of Anna. Her prospects are less than poor as the country is in the depression of the '30s.In her struggle she recalls the many misadventures she shared with Anna and longs for the support of her friend.Will she have to return? Will she be able to endure her father's cruelty after her knowing another life style? Where is Anna?
