An inspiring story of one runner's adventure in 2006

I couldn't help but enjoy reading about Fiddy2. As a runner myself (although I've fallen off of late) I enjoyed every bit of his tale of 52 marathons. I am not too sure if a non runner would enjoy this book, though, as although it is inspirational it certainly would not appeal to most who have not ran a marathon and experienced the ups and downs that the runner will invariably go through each and every time. Having run 17 marathons and 50ks I can say without a doubt that I went through many of the ups and downs Dane went through and couldn't help but laugh along with him. For a runner I think this would be an inspirational book because of the underlying message of not only the book but of his running mentality, that of never knowing what you can't do until you try to do it. 52 marathons in 52 weekends? Sure... 202 mile relay by himself? Sure... As a side not I followed Fiddy2 ever since the SF marathon of 2006, my first marathon ever and where I first heard about what Dane was doing. I sub sequentially followed his blog and re-read the entries that I had missed. See Dane Run oftentimes reads and feels exactly like his blog. Although this could be a detriment I found that having read the Fiddy2 blog in 2006 that enough time has passed that reading See Dane Run was still worth reading as he does throw in anecdotes throughout to spruce up the reading and make it a little more interesting. One interesting fact is in comparing See Dane Run to Karnazes' 50/50. Both took on a strenuous undertaking on their bodies and defied the odds. Even more so they proved many a person wrong with the thought that that much running would be detrimental to the legs and they would ultimately get slower. Both, in fact, increased their times the closer they got to their goal, which showed that if you take care of yourself and train properly than running in and of itself is not bad for the body. The fact that I haven't ran a marathon since last November, nor ran much for that matter, and after reading See Dane Run I wanted to go out and run another marathon is enough for me to feel inspired, which is enough for me to recommend this to any and all runners. 4.5 stars.

Loved it!

Although I was not able to witness Dane running in any of his events, reading about his experiences almost makes you feel like you were there right along side him. I am a non-runner, but I could still relate to Dane's book because it is not just about running, it's about having a passion for something and putting your heart and soul into it. He's eager to give credit to everybody in his life who has made a difference in one way or another. It's not all about "me, me, me!" Also, his humor had me laughing out loud at times! All in all a very well-written, entertaining, and inspiring read.

Inspiring

Rauschenberg's book recounts his adventures as he attempted, and completed, a marathon a week for an entire year. He manages to describe each race in a way that makes all 52 different and interesting. Runners will be interested in his strategies and all readers will be uplifted by his humor and optimism as he copes with the logistics of traveling to a race every weekend. Few runners could knit together 52 race reports into a book that is nearly as compelling as a good mystery. The tension in Rauschenberg's book is not "Who done it?" but "Can he do it?". I read it in two sittings and I'm not a runner.

A fun run... er read

I met Dane at the Registration for the Little Grand Canyon Marathon/Half Marathon/10K race and he was there signing books. I bought one and my wife read about half of it aloud on the way home from the race. It is really fun to read, Dane has a great sense of humor and he gives great descriptions of the races, and his experience with the people he met. Also, what a great cause to run for, L'arche Mobile, and the book can be used as a sort of marathon running guide. All in all, a good book from a good author and a good human being, looking forward to more in the future.

a great read that leaves you feeling like you can try anything

Loved this book, and not just as a runner. Anyone who wants inspiration (peppered with humor)on how to go about trying to be bigger and better then you have ever been before should read this. I also loved the first hand account of races from all over the US. Plus Dane manages to write a book about something amazing he has done without annoying ego and grandiose, while at the same time praising marathoners of all abilities, and highlighting what is great about the sport of long distance running. You will finish this book thinking, "now what should I try?"
