Outstanding Exposition of the Eternal Security of Believers

The author Harold Barker points out that there are many verses in the Bible which teach the eternal security of the believer, not the one or two which are commonly cited. He also shows the many verses which are misunderstood. For example, in the book of Hebrews we read that, upon falling away, one cannot be renewed to repentence. But this does not deal with salvation. It deals with spiritual maturity. Barker draws a perceptive analogy with the Israelites who grumbled in the desert. They reached a point in their sinful rebellion wherein they could no longer be renewed to repentance and allowed to enter the Promised Land. But they still remained God's people, and, while forced to wander in the desert for 40 years, were still allowed to experience a scaled-down version of God's original promised blessings.

Exceptional Study On Eternal Security

This is perhaps one of the best studies on the doctrine of eternal security. It provide ample background on the subject in a manageable size book. The most powerful aspect of the book is that it looks at many individual verses that are controversial or relate directly to the subject. With a scriptural index, it is a great resource to have. And if you are like me, I started out not believing in the doctrine of eternal security. However, this book challenged my views by looking at the many scripture passages associated with this and their context. The author's knowledge of Greek also helps clearify many passages. His explanation on passages such as John 10:28-29 showing how a true believer can not loose his salvation even by his own efforts was enlightening. Since this book is focused on explaining Scripture, I would recommend this book to anyone, no matter what your view is on the subject. But to those who do not hold this doctrine of Grace, beware, this book may go far in showing you what the Bible clearly teaches about the once and forever finished work of Christ and the extent of our salvation in Christ.
