Unlike almost everyone else I really enjoyed this book. It may have been my first read by this author. I thought it was a quick easy read with a hint of humor and romance. I couldn't put it down!
Romance with a twist

The first CD was slow going. I thought if it didn't get any better on the 2nd CD, I wouldn't continue. WELL! Was I glad I held out. Once you got to the 2nd CD, the story picked right up to Ms Deveraux's usual wonderful writing. A 12 year old girl has a crush on an older man. Cassie never loses her feelings even though Jeff married and had a little girl. After college, Cassie becomes a nanny to Jeff's little girl as Jeff has been widowed. Jeff, his father, Tom, Jeff's daughter and Cassie all live quietly until one day, Cassie meets the neighbor, Althea Fairmont. Althea is a famous actress who has a gardener who looks like anything but a gardener. Once Althea connives to meet Cassie, everything changes. Cassie begins to discover that everyone is not who they claim to be. Cassie only wanted Jeff to notice her and is still in love with him. Jeff steadfastly keeps his distance. After a year of trying to get Jeff's attention, Cassie leaves his house, with Althea's help and starts to live her own life. Jeff now finds he is miserable but is afraid of putting Cassie in danger. Between Althea wishes and Cassie's desires, Jeff and Cassie meet again at a murder mystery weekend. Instead of a recreation of a past murder, a real one occurs and Jeff and Cassie work together to solve it. Natalie Moore reads the story with passion and voice inflections to help the listener understand who is speaking. She is easy to listen to and understand. This is another great romance story from Jude Deveraux.

I have read every one of Jude Deveraux books some more that three or four times. This was first book that I could okay for a young adult which could lead to the next generation of Deveraux readers. This books subject was unique and open the door for other characters and plots to derive from this storyline. It what I expect for Deveraux she hasn't let me down yet in the almost thirty years of reading her. If you are looking for something simple and light to read then this is the book for you. Totally acceptable for young adult with advance reading.
engaging romantic whodunit

As a twelve years old child Cassie Madden fell in love with kindhearted Jefferson Ames. Although she moaned being born too late, as he is older than her, she still wanted to be near him as often as possible. Years later at college Cassie knows that in spite of being engaged to someone else, she still loves Jefferson, who is a widower raising his daughter five years old Elsbeth. She ends her engagement and travels to Williamsburg, Virginia where her Jeff lives with his offspring. She becomes Elsbeth's nanny. Meanwhile Jefferson, his friends and his father enjoy the antics of elderly eccentric movie-actress Althea Fairmont who lives nearby. Althea arranges a special performance of a real unsolved murder mystery with Cassie and Jeff starring in the lead roles; her goal is to see if anyone can uncover the truth while Jeff begins to fall in love with Cassie; who never stopped living him The romance is well written as the lead characters are a fine pairing once Jeff no longer considers Cassie as a younger sister. However, the tale belongs to the mystery as seemingly everyone conceals SECRETS; with every revelation the plot twists and keeps twisting. Readers will enjoy this engaging romantic whodunit as the support cast will keep the audience wondering what secret Jude Deveraux will reveal next. Harriet Klausner
