Secrets of the Anasazi

Maya is a modern-day teen of Native American blood. Her sensitivity for nature and curiosity for discovering the roots of her people drives her to seek out her heritage, but her mother forbids her to learn their customs. When her mother becomes ill, Maya is shipped off to her tribal family where she learns about her rare gift as a shaman. She discovers that her mother's illness is due to a curse. To break it, she must find the door to the Underworld of Creation Legend. The horse trainer's son is a delightful distraction to her worries, if only her older brother would leave them alone. On the evening they gain entry to the Underworld, through the secret passage, they are headed off by a dangerous pair of men, and forced to divulge their secrets. They are taken hostage and forced to show the men to the City of Gold. Maya and her cousins put their quest for her mother's cure on hold. There are riddles to solve and tribal symbols to translate. Along their travels they discover the men have poisoned their Native American elder. They must find the Lake of Healing Waters before it's too late. Through Maya's journey she discovers how shaman are responsible for the balance of nature, and how we are all part of the circle of life.
