Tang Hao (唐豪, 1897-1959) was a pioneering Chinese martial arts historian and researcher, known for his rigorous academic approach to studying the origins and development of traditional Chinese martial arts. Unlike many of his contemporaries, who relied on folklore and unverified accounts, Tang Hao emphasized historical documentation, archaeological evidence, and comparative analysis to trace the evolution of martial systems, weapons, and training methods. He traveled extensively across China, investigating Shaolin, Wudang, and various regional styles, debunking myths and clarifying the historical roots of disciplines such as Taijiquan, Xingyiquan, and Baguazhang. His works, including A Study of Shaolin and Wudang and The Origins of Taijiquan, remain influential in martial arts scholarship, setting a precedent for evidence-based research in the field.
