Not for sport, but excellent self-defense instruction...

This is one of the best books I've found in my 10 years of Judo/Ju-Jitsu study. The diagrams are very useful and informative. It is not a good book for someone to try to learn the art by themselves, but as a supplement to their formal training, it is indispensible. Judo techniques form a large portion of the techniques, but this is NOT sport Judo: it is the classical self-defense application of the Judo throws and joint locks. Rahming has salvaged Judo techniques from the sports world, and brought it back to its original Martial Art form. He has supplemented the Judo core techniques with other techniques which were added to Myama Ryu by its founder, Professor Pereira. If you are training with a skilled instructor, this book is an excellent study aid. Once you have a basic understanding of the bio-mechanics of throwing techniques, this book will be immensely useful. Caution is advised: you must practice with someone who is skilled in Ukemi (the art of break-falls)! Again, this is no substitute for a skilled instructor, but rather a superb supplement for your training.
Not a sport! A brutal but efffective self-defense art

This book is an excellent study guide for the beginning jujitsu practitioner. After receiving permanent damage to my right hip in an accident I looked for an effective self-defense system. I tried Karate and Aikido but found karate was too stressful on the injured joint and Aikido took more patience than I had. Miyama-Ryu removes the mysticism from Aikido techniques, the superfluous moves from Karate and the sporting intent of Judo to form an effective self-defense system for everyone. Sensei D'arcy Rahming discredits popular martial arts myths and explains how and why these techniques work. The first six techniques can be practiced and learned safely at home but the throws and joint locks require a trained intstuctor. I found the book to be very motivating since it describes: timing, distance, balance, necessary conditioning, and the most common types of street attacks and how to counter them. The book also gives short biographical accounts of great warriors such as Miyamato Musashi (The Book Of Five Rings)and Sokaku Takeda, the teacher of Morihei Ueshiba. I found the illustrations to be nicely androgynous and without the grainy blurriness of live action shots usually found in martial arts books. A must read for beginners especially if you cannot remember some jujitsu terms and what they mean.
Good reference for Jujutsu practictioners

This book is a must for all Miyama Ryu practitioners. It is an excellent reference that finally chronicles what may have yet again become "the lost art of jujutsu". It covers all the materials that will move a practitioner from white to green belt. My only criticism is that the illustrations could have been better. Live action photographs would have greatly improved the overall quality. Also, the book could have used a better index.
