my first steampunk novel

This is the first book by Morgan Busse that I have read and the author has found herself another fan! Her writing style is easy to read and her fantasy world is fascinating, as are her characters. As with any start of a series, the first half of the book moved a bit slowly as the world’s infrastructure and way of life explained itself but then the plot took off at a fast pace with tons of action, drama, and suspense. The setting is quite unique with a devastating Mist that humans most avoid, a mashing of advanced technology with old world ideas and processes in their society, but also has the expected hero trying to do the right thing and the elite of the society wielding power and doing everything to maintain the status quo. Theo is a lovable hero and Cass is the spunky heroine who complements him on their mission. The themes of finding home and sense of belonging ring true in both Theo and Cass’ lives. Zombies, burning bullets, flying ships, and deadly spores abound in this incredible adventure but be warned - this book leaves you with a cliffhanger so you need to be prepared to wait for the next book.
