poignant, surprising story

I liked this book. It wasn't what I thought it would be like--it isn't a vivacious teen tale. It's about a thoughtful, independent Australian teen on the brink of adulthood coming to terms with her past. I haven't read it for a while, but I remember thinking it would be tawdrier, and was pleasantly surprised by the solid writing and likable characters. I'm only sorry I can't be more specific, as I said, it's been a while, but I would like to caution that this a thoughtful slice of life, character driven book--it's not for people who must have action packed plots.
