Commander Lloyd M. Bucher, Captain of the USS Pueblo, and Lieutenant Edward R. Murphy, Jr., Executive Officer and second in command, receiving Purple Hearts for wounds inflicted during the capture of... This description may be from another edition of this product.
Murphy's account of what happened on the USS Pueblo is fascinating and well written. He takes us through the entire story, from his assignment on the Pueblo to the court of inquiry and then to a special meeting he had with top level white house officials in Washington. I found it particularly fascinating to read that the government was aware of what was going on inside the prison compound while the crew was being held captive. Murphy does not reveal the source of this information. Was it obtained by technical means or by having an old fashioned informant inside? We will probably never know. Murphy criticizes the CO of the ship for his mishandling of various tasks and for his drunkeness. We will probably never know the true story, but in my 30 year association with the US Navy, I have never seen an officer criticize someone above him -- unless he was right. I believe Murphy. I have been on the USS Pueblo in Pyongyang and I was struck as to how small it was. All of the crew deserve our respect and gratitude for performing a service that few could or would do.
