Fusco faces an inquiry into his handling of the case of his father-in-law. He is put in charge of records management. While the inquiry goes on he finds some records of a game where the loser dies being played over the internet. He is sent out of the way by a rival to find a missing woman. The gambling house she worked for has other problems he discovers. The local sheriff commits suicide or does he? Exonerated he still is doing little but record keeping. A political investigation gets him in the hot seat when his partner is killed. He spends time hiding out and in prison. His wife divorces him. He retires and takes the sheriff's job in the county where the casino operates. As usual he finds women along the way and his weakness for them comes out. He seldom meets a woman he doesn't like.
