A Wonderful Read

Even if you're not thinking about a retirement of volunteering, this book is a wonderful read. And if you are considering a volunteer retirement lifestyle, it is chock full of anecdotes, helpful tips, and wise guidance for doing so successfully. The author clearly has a bright sense of adventure and curiosity, as well as a giving heart, but she's no Pollyanna. She has done a thorough study of how to carry out a serial volunteer lifestyle with an eye to economy, safety, and, not least, fun, and she shares her findings in a clear, well organized, and engaging style. I'm not an avid traveler myself, yet I was quite taken by her rich experiences. This book would make a great gift for any healthy retiree open to one of the creative possibilities that time of life can offer.

Fabulous tips and resources for an active retirement lifestyle

'Second Career Volunteer' is really two great books under one cover. The book overall gives new hope to those of us wanting to volunteer, and possibly travel, on a limited income. The interviews with people that have taken the plunge and moved outside their comfort zone are inspirational. Traynor shares her perspective and experience in a way that is both interesting and informative. The big surprise for me was how valuable the appendices are, even if you are not as adventurous as Traynor. The self evaluation and questions to ask when considering a volunteer opportunity are very helpful, the section on documents summarizes information we all should have, whether we are ready to retire or not. This book would have saved me a lot of time early in my retirement. And then, the icing on the cake; Barbara Traynor has provided a great bibliography and lists dozens of volunteer organizations with their web sites. Great holiday gift for your friends that are thinking about the next phase of their lives.

Varied scenarios help decision making

This book presents examples people of varying life styles and motives for wanting to volunteer. Volunteering is a very personal decision and this book aids you in looking at the many ramifications of volunteering. It includes finances, family, motives, hazards, and rewards of volunteering. It looks at the nitty gritty of volunteering. I recommend it to those that want to know more about volunteering before making a decision. CC Fisher

Paperback wisdom!

What a refreshing re-look at retirement and the options available! Who would think that retirement for those of whom have realized recently smaller retirement nest eggs could look forward to retirement again!

all you ever wanted to know about making a difference after age 65!

If you think the "volunteer life-style" may be for you but you're not sure about how to do it, get out from behind the 8-ball and buy this book! It will help you to avoid many mistakes, and the enthusiasm of the volunteers she interviews (yes, I am one, in chapter 2!) will bolster your own. I gave it to 12 of my soon-to-retire friends, and I'm really eager to see where they are in 5 or 10 years - and where will YOU be? Read this book, and you may find out!
