John Applecot receives the disturbing call at 5:30 am-he is asked to come down to Folly Beach to ID the body of his dead wife. Moments before in the early moments of dawn in Charleston, SC, on Folly Beach, a patrolman on an ATV patrols the beach just after a sand sculpturing contest the day before. The high tide has slowly washed what remains of the unbelievably well-sculptured works of art away. Then he tramps down on the breaks, nearly tipping the ATV over-all but one sculpture mysteriously remains. A mermaid. But, he soon discovers that it's not a mermaid but the dead body of a young woman, seaweed tied around her ankle. The beach goes from calm to a carnival of lights from the EMT and police cars. Before the detective can offer John any condolences, John confesses to the murder of his wife. But, there is only one problem-the detective does not buy John's story.
