Seasons of Joy and Sorrow: Sixto’s Story

Seasons of Joy and Sorrow- Sixto's story is about how an American Hispanic Migrant Farmworker Family struggled with racism, death, World War II, and racism during the 1950s through the 1960s. The Hispanic family overcomes poverty and racism through values placed by the father and mother to overcome and obtain the dream. I am Sixto, and this is my story of an American Hispanic Farmworker's struggle with poverty, racism, and resilience during the 1950s and 1960s in America. My parents, migrant farmworkers, knew well the sting of racism and the weight of poverty. Despite these challenges, they instilled a strong work ethic and a deep sense of love and joy for our family. My father, a proud and hardworking man, fought in the European World War II. He returned home with a heavy heart and PTSD, having witnessed the horrors of war. Yet, he found solace in his family and worked tirelessly to provide for us. My mother, a strong and loving woman, kept our family together. She taught us the importance of education and always reminded us of our heritage and culture. Tragedy struck one fateful day when my younger sibling drowned. The joy and laughter that once filled our home were replaced by sorrow and grief. But even in our darkest moments, my parents remained steadfast in their love and dedication to our family. Our migrant travels to Idaho labor potato fields and to the California grape, tomato, and orchard fields. Enduring the labor struggles of Ceasar Chavez's Farmworkers Union against unfair wages. They reminded us of the importance of perseverance and the power of our cultural values. Together, we navigated through the seasons of joy and sorrow, always remembering the American dreams ahead. My travels to Germany as a US Air Force Captain serving as a mental health officer for US military servicemen and their dependents. Becoming a new Israeli immigrant in the 1980s, drafted into the Israeli Army, buying a house in Jerusalem, raising a family, and returning to Texas.
