Haskell Maloney was cruelly orphaned when she was just a baby. Now, twenty-two years later, she receives confirmation of the bitter truth she always suspected: the fallen war hero whose name she shares was not her father. Her quest for answers--and a personal history--brings Haskell to the famed Oriental Institute in Chicago, a city in which her mother lived and thrived before her strange, untimely death. But by rummaging around in the darkness, Haskell's exposing much more than she bargained for. And now she's racing against the clock to discover who she really is . . . and why someone is suddenly determined to kill her.
This book is one of my favorites from Barbara Michaels. It's discriptive and enthralling. A great read, especially for fans of mysteries.
Queen of gothic suspense

Barabara Michaels is my favorite author. In this book, as in all her others, she blends suspense and romance without gore or graphic sexual exploits. Her heroines are always intelligent, independent, and memorable. Always a good bedtime read.
A Book That Can Not Leave Your Hand

This book was amazing, I could not put it down. Not even for a minute. It took me less than two weeks to read it all. The main character Haskell is a young 22 year old woman in search for her real Father, and the mysterious death of Leah, her mother. Once you think you have the answers, you will be surprised. The ending was good, surprising, but good. Haskell rules in this book , just because she survives alot. I reccommend this book to anyone. I am an avid Stephen King fan, and now I am a fan of this author, Barbara Michaels is a terric writer, I am going to look for another book by her now. WOW WHAT A BOOK !!!!
Not especially super, but a good book all the same.

Though I love Barbara Michaels books, this is not one of my favorites. It is fascinating though, and the character developement is better than in some of the other books. The ending is certainly a shocker, though not as much as some of her books. I would certainly recommend it, but if you really want a tricky ending or a truly satisfying read, try INTO THE DARKNESS or WINGS OF THE FALCON
