Comprehensive and very accessible

I found this book to be extremely well written and comprehensive, an excellent introduction to what can be a mind-numbingly complex topic. There is the occasional error (1756 is given as the year for the British capture of Bengal, for example) and odd spelling (Goloconda instead of Golconda), but for the most part, de Souza's work is an sharp and remarkably even-handed work of historical synthesis.
