This study analyzed the hematological parameters of a Tunisian population hospitalized to screen for anemia and its main etiologies, notably hemoglobinopathies. Two groups were studied: 29 patients who underwent a complete blood count (CBC) and 74 patients who underwent hemoglobin electrophoresis. The results revealed a high prevalence of anemia in elderly women and infants, as well as several cases of sickle cell disease and thalassemic syndromes. Erythrocyte indices made it possible to distinguish the different forms of anemia (microcytic, normocytic, macrocytic), facilitating diagnostic orientation. The combination of CBC and electrophoresis offers a better understanding of the mechanisms of anemia, and underlines the importance of early detection, appropriate management and preventive nutritional and genetic measures.
