School leadership: a calling

Human resources management requires a strong sense of going the extra mile. In a school setting, the headteacher finds themselves caught in a triangle of challenges, each as difficult to resolve as the next. Facing them are pupils who are drawn to the forbidden and take pleasure in breaking the rules; on the one hand, the absence and inaction of parents drive the point home, whilst on the other, the childish moods of the deputy headteachers leave them at a loss. Succeeding under these conditions demands a great deal of composure and faith on a very grand scale. Yet the merit of these soldiers, these sentinels of virtue, is never rewarded, never celebrated.
