On a walking holiday, he meets a landlady who shows him what domestic discipline truly involves; meets bad weather resulting in an unexpected encounter, surprising results. Now in service, Jane finds her role, enters service where she'll have to perform to the utmost of her ability. Jane, now in regular job takes pains to learn her new tasks, finds even so, trouble from the past can still appear to subject her to a severe ordeal. He's persuaded to neglect duties, finds the penalties can be very severe, on Punishment Day. Jane and Christine go for a walk in the rain to visit a neighbour, get a very warm welcome. Last day of holiday brings a strange reversal of roles, Jane finds she still has to accept what comes with her position, and bend to circumstance.
