In Scenes from Japan: Chiba, Sapporo, and Masuda, the second of three volumes in the series, artist Kendric Tonn documents a painting trip through Japan. Inspired by 20th-century Japanese printmakers like Kawase Hasui and Yoshida Hiroshi, Tonn set out on a ten-week journey through three cities to engage directly with Japan as a subject by drawing and painting on-location.

The result is a collection of over two dozen mixed-media watercolor paintings accompanied by short essays. The pieces cover a range of subjects, from island shrines and stone lanterns to urban nocturnes and distant cityscapes.

With a preface by the artist and an introduction by twenty-year Tokyo salariman Patrick McKenzie, as well as a section on composition and process, Scenes from Japan is a record of travel and artistic practice. It will appear to those with an interest in Japanese aesthetics, plein air painters, and anyone interested in how place becomes image.
