She's a German Shepherd who oversees a small farm of strange animals, with tricky chickens, laughing pigeons, and soldier pigs! Everything is as it should be, until Scarlet notices many unsettling changes on the farm. One day, a tiny migrating swift seeks shelter from a fierce storm under the farmhouse roof. Wishing to ease her troubled mind, Scarlet asks the bird if, during its travels, it will search for something beyond the farm that doesn't change. The swift agrees, visiting Scarlet each year as it migrates in the spring and autumn. Each time they meet, Scarlet shares stories about the changing farm, and the swift shares stories from its search. But both their growing friendship and the search are put at risk when a world war reaches the farm.
