Book Overview

We know by now that Scaredy Squirrel only feels safe when he's at home in his nut tree, with his defenses, his emergency kit and his back-up plans at the ready. So even though the sun is shining and it's time for a vacation, Scaredy does not want to go to the beach --- that vast, frightening place where a squirrel could get stranded. (Not to mention other hazards such as sea monsters, falling coconuts, seagulls, pirates and lobsters.)

Review from www.firrkids.com

Scaredy Squirrel is off on an another adventure! Summer has arrived, but Scaredy knows the beach is rife with dangerous packs of pirates, mobs of lobsters, and flocks of seagulls. For safety's sake, he opts to build a faux beach right at the base of his own nut tree. His imaginative techniques and improvisational materials result in a satisfactorily realistic beach. The only missing ingredient - a soothing ocean sound. Scaredy has no choice but to acquire a seashell from the real beach, a dangerous mission. For a phobic squirrel, a beach foray demands a time table, risk identification map, avoidance techniques, and protective body gear. Scaredy quickly discovers there is one variable he neglected to allow for and he is forced to adapt! These pages are packed with clever little gems just waiting to be discovered. Scaredy's overly-detailed plans and goofy protective gear will have your kids giggling. This Squirrel is so endearing, you can't help but be won over by his quirky nature. He's got issues, but he's also got plenty of hustle and imagination. You gotta love that big toothy grin of his!

A Mob of Lobsters!

I am a Youth Services Librarian, and I was so thrilled to hear that there was a third Scaredy Squirrel book coming out! Melanie Watt doesn't disappoint, the third book is just as witty and fun as the previous two. Like Mo Willems, Watt's illustrations are simple but incredibly expressive and funny. I love the way she draws the emotions of her characters, and the angry lobsters had me giggling all over the library. This book is just too cute and witty and hilarious, what a great summer read for kids!

Scaredy Squirrel Does it Again!

Once again Watt delivers a classic story about a terrified squirrel. I am a school librarian, and these books work great with pre-k to fifth grade. I hope Watt keeps writing more books about our favorite squirrel!

The most read book at our house!

This is the most read book at our house! Funny, awesome pictures, easy to read. We love all the scaredy squirrel books.

A very humorous book about problem solving

Reviewed by Conner (age 4) and Mom for Reader Views (3/08) Scaredy Squirrel is frightened of a lot of things: crowds, seagulls, and jellyfish. He wants to experience the tranquil getaway of his own beach, but he is missing things to make it real. So he embarks on a mission to go to the beach and bring back the objects he needs to make his own beach feel like a real getaway. Of course, no adventure goes exactly as planned, even with Scaredy's extreme talent in plan and map making. "Do you think that the squirrel should be scared?" "No, he made plans. Though he was scared of seagulls, jellyfish, coconuts, lobsters, pirate ships and sea monsters." "Are you scared of them?" "No." "Why not?" "I can just hit them." "Do you like the beach?" "Not very much, because I don't like sharks." "Do you think it's important to make plans?" "Yes, because you could get lost. Let's make a map Mommy." "Why do you think he was scared?" "I don't know." "Do you think he was scared because he doesn't know what things are?" "No! I'm not scared of anything." Then we proceeded to make our own map. Parent's comments: "Scaredy Squirrel at the Beach" is a very humorous book about problem solving and handling contingencies. I liked that it took a relatively simple event, going to the beach, and broke it down into steps and ideas that probably occur naturally to an adult, but could be very important detail in the mind of a young child. It was also inspiring to us to make our own plans and detailed maps.
