The chief aim of this volume of studies is one of practicability. Scale practice is essential in the complete mastery of violin playing and no violinist can long maintain a technique without daily indulgence in such practice. All left hand technique of the violin reaches its greatest value in practice when a chromatic sequence is followed. Therefore it follows that this work brings a varied form of scales and arpeggios along with special exercises in thirds, fourths, sixths, and fingered octaves. Thus the hand and fingers gradually are accustomed to the greater demand made upon them both in strength and accuracy as the string height increases and the interval distance decreases.
