Saving Women from the Church

I can't say enough about this book. It has revealed to me that Jesus really does love and include every one. It is cultural bias and church tradition that has oppressed and still oppresses women, not Jesus. It has healed so many wounds for me. I wish every woman would read this book and study it in groups. I wish every church would read it and live it. I am so sad that cultural bias has stood between me and the Truth. I am angry that the twisting of the scripture has caused so much suffering. Please, please, read this book.

A brave and sincere message

While reading "Saving Women from the Church," I was impressed by Susan's honesty and bravery. She has the ability to tactfully address the shared pain many women experience during the practice of religion. Being a woman who can relate to this subject, many of the issues she discusses touched me on a personal level. I found Susan's exercises at the end of each chapter helped me to engage more fully with the book. The exercises encouraged me to incorporate my imaginative self into the reading process. This opportunity to activate my creative side, after having absorbed each chapter's intellectual challenges, made for a holistic reading experience. Taken together, the book's equally strong intellectual and creative dimensions really helped me open up to the text and apply the information to my life. Susan's biblical knowledge is clearly demonstrated and incontestable. Susan not only challenges the status quo, she provides a solid biblical basis for her challenges. "Saving Women from the Church" is a valuable read for any woman who has felt marginalized in the church.

where his followers wound, Jesus heals

Saving Women From the Church: How Jesus Mends a Divide is not another book of biblical, theological, or historical arguments for Christian egalitarianism. Rather, Susan McLeod-Harrison offers a devotional guide with the purpose of ministering directly to women who have been hurt by Christians wielding patriarchal positions to demean, control, and judge. Her purpose is to remind these despairing women that the church is not Jesus. During his earthly ministry, Jesus demonstrated extraordinary grace and respect toward women; and today, even where his people wound each other, Jesus continues to offer healing. Practical chapters set up modern scenarios women will find familiar, followed by a narrative retelling of a Scripture passage in which Jesus encounters a particular woman. McLeod-Harrison then unpacks the passage, explaining how Jesus' words and actions apply to the issues raised. A list of reflection questions and a meditation for healing close each chapter. McLeod-Harrison writes with a winsome spirit and her devotional studies are soundly biblical with occasional footnotes for those interested in digging deeper into the textual or historical context. Recommend for women who have questioned their faith or withdrawn from regular Christian fellowship because of the demeaning attitudes of fellow Christians.
