Saving Salmon in the 21st Century: Representing The Salmon's Perspective

If you care about salmon , the two illustrated stories in this new book will provide ideas and perspectives you've probably never found in teaching guides and science textbooks. This book isn't a technical guide to salmon biology, but if you're an educator trying to explain salmon conservation, these stories will help you and your students understand why the future of wild salmon remains precarious. Saving wild salmon is like mediating humanity's impact on climate change - a terribly complicated, nuanced challenge. Oregon, Washington, and Northern California have the best scientists and policy managers dedicated to guiding salmon conservation. Still, I wonder if that's good enough , or if there's something more we need to do. I'm retired now, but in 1997 I led a team of people who created the Oregon Plan for Salmon and Watersheds , a 3000-page salmon conservation plan. I also wrote Down to the Sea, an imaginative illustrated story about Oregon's commitment to save salmon. Free copies of that book were distributed to every fifth-grade classroom in Oregon in 2001. As a followup, I published Conversation With a Salmon in 2014, a story about a fanciful exchange between a scientist and a wise salmon. I decided that this is a good time to revisit 1990s conservation planning, hoping to help 21st century educators understand the challenges of what we called "saving salmon." I believe that this book is scientifically accurate and timeless. I'm confident that anyone trying to understand how wild salmon are affected by people will be entertained and intrigued by the ideas you'll find here. At the very least , I hope you enjoy the watercolors, and that some of these paintings will brighten your day. Jay Nicholas
