Two centuries of religious war and political conflicts in France caused Protestant Huguenots to emigrate to other European countries, including the Dutch Republic. Many of those living and working in the Dutch Republic decided to emigrate to the New World during the late sixteen hundreds. Many Dutch citizens also emigrated to the New World, settling mainly in port cities along the coast. In New York, in addition to New Amsterdam, they settled the towns located along the picturesque Hudson Valley: Kingston, New Paltz and Hurley. Growing up I had no idea that there was any New York Dutch or Huguenot blood in my veins. I had always known I was English, Welsh, Scottish and Swedish. I also believed the family rumors that there was some French in there, and, in fact, at times in my life when asked about my lineage I always included French. But when I started researching and tracing my ancestress, Sarah Jane (Fearon) Carpenter's lineage, I discovered that her ancestral lineage contained that of numerous French and Dutch settlers. So, because of my second great grandmother, Sarah, I can say, yes, I do indeed have French and, surprise, Dutch ancestry. This booklet describes my path to find and confirm Sarah's lineage and it also includes pedigree charts detailing the various descendant lines from those earliest settlers.
