Sandy the Silly Seagull is a cartoon picture book for bird lovers and Galvestonians everywhere.
Sandy enjoys cruising the beach, pooping on cars, and tormenting tourists. She's an enthusiastic artist in the rich tradition of organic decoration among island birds.
She also enjoys stealing guest cocktails at her home, the Hotel Galvez. When she raids the drinks, she gets tipsy, hassling guests and causing a problem for Mister Joe, the janitor, who has to clean up after her.
The trouble comes to a head on New Year's Eve when she invites her feathered friends to a party at the Galvez. Disrupting the ceremonies, they devour the refreshments, sing a little karaoke, flirt with guests, and make a world-class mess.
Joe decides to address the issue. Channeling his inner mad scientist, he sets aside his mop and creates a fruity drink called a Seagull Sparkler, which contains no silly sauce. Serving it al fresco to winged partiers on an outside table, he can freshen the premises with a hose and make everyone happy.
At last, Sandy can drink without getting wonky, and Joe gets some free time to himself.
The story addresses the issue of substance abuse humorously and lightly, making it suitable for children. It also portrays a cleaning professional as a strong, smart hero. Sandy's story is also full of local humor.
