Book Overview

"Sand" is a powerful and evocative tale of the American West, written by the legendary cowboy author Will James. The story follows the journey of a young man named Tilden, a newcomer to the rugged cattle country who must learn the harsh realities of life on the plains. Central to the narrative is his obsession with capturing a magnificent and elusive wild black stallion known as Sand, a creature that embodies the untameable spirit of the desert and the mountains.

As Tilden pursues the great horse across a landscape of shifting dunes and sun-scorched earth, he undergoes a profound transformation from an outsider to a seasoned man of the range. The novel explores themes of perseverance, the bond between man and beast, and the deep respect required to survive in an unforgiving environment. James's intimate knowledge of ranch life and equine behavior shines through in every chapter, offering readers an authentic glimpse into the vanishing world of the open range. "Sand" is more than just a western adventure; it is a moving tribute to the strength of the wild and the grit of those who seek to find their place within it. This classic work remains a cornerstone of western literature, capturing the beauty and brutality of the frontier with unmatched sincerity.

An uplifting tale of one man's redemption.

There's a big distance between an alcoholic dandy from the city, with too much money and too little ambition, and a cowboy that's a good hand on a ranch. But that is the journey that Bert Tilden, nicknamed the Corpse by his decadent city friends, decides to attempt.Accidentally lost on the prairie, Tilden stumbles into a cowboy camp. The skills and values that he finds there awaken him to a whole new world. Tales of a beautiful and uncatchable wild black stallion raise the determination in his mind and heart to be the one to capture the legendary horse. This is the story of one man's internal odyssey, and of his quest for a horse - and love. But the journey turns out to be far more important than the goal.Of course, the story is told in Will James' inimitable Western prairie jargon, giving it the ring of the wide open spaces. You can almost smell the sagebrush. Wonderful.

Another one of Will James' amazing "horse whisperer" story.

Sand is the story of a greenhorn cowboy and a black stallion. The greenhorn devotes his life to capturing the stallion by building wild horse traps, while winning a young lady's heart. Another one of Will James' amazing stories full of sketches that will "jump straight out at you"
