great book, but some VBScript & HTML exp. req'd

This is a really good book and gives a lot of tips on writing good, efficient code. However, if you have no HTML experience and no experience with programming languages, this will go right over your head. You need a good handle on XML to understand the last 1 or 2 chaps as well, but those chaps. are pretty much optional anyway.

You should buy this book IF. . .

I recently purchased this book to learn how to make my webpages interact with a live database. This book does that and more. After reading other people's reviews I need to qualify my "it's incredible" rating. I am a PC fanatic who has never used VBscript. However, I did do a bit of basic programming in high school. If "for . . .next" is not a foreign statement to you, then you will greatly benefit from this book. Because the examples given are very practical, they can easily be modified to fit your needs. Change a date here, a statement there and you will have the custom page you envisioned.Personally, I am simply amazed at what I learned in less than a day. If you are not a programmer but are not intimidated by a few lines of code, this is the book for you. If you're stumped but you hate buying computer books because you usually like to figure it out yourself, this is the book for you.

Excellent Resource--Not for Beginners

I found this book to be an excellent source of information on how to set up ASP pages to do some *real* tasks. It really is wonderful and provides an excellent level of detail to the reader on a variety of relevant subjects.HOWEVER, please do not consider this book for one who is a new programmer. I have been programming for a number of years, and found many of the concepts discussed in the book required several readings for full understanding. Contrary to the "beginner" rating on the cover, I believe this book requires the reader to have some proficiency in a language such as Visual Basic.

A good way of starting asp from scratch

This is an easy to read book, with carefully explained examples. It was the perfect book for me, since I appraoched ASP with no previous experiece. The examples covered all relate to common uses of ASP - database access, creating a 'shoping cart', tracking user sessions etc. I used this book to get me going, and ASP In A Nutshell once I was more at home with ASP. The one possible drawback is that ASP in 24 hours charges through the basics of VB script - some sort more extensive reference of components and operators would have been helpful, esspecially for those of you like me with no Visual Basic experience.

Very helpful and full of examples...

In the past, I have not been that impressed with books published by SAMS; however, this is an exception. I almost canceled my order because they missed the initial publication date, but I am so glad I didn't. I have quite a bit of experience with HTML and DHTML, but have avoided ASP technology. While this book is rated for beginners, it covers everything I needed and a whole lot more... stuff like XML, configuring IIS, security blah blah blah... it exceeded my expectations by a lot. I plan to use it as reference material for ASP, IIS and security features. If you are a beginner, or a little more advanced, and want to know everything about ASP++, but don't want to read thousands of pages... get this book!
