Book Overview

Sammy, a sergeant major fish, and Scarlett, a yellowtail snapper, are best friends who have found safety in a mangrove forest after being washed out of a tidal pool in a large wave. But they've decided to leave the mangroves and their friend Manny and journey across the sea-grass meadows to the barrier reef of the Florida Keys, the place that will be their home in adulthood.
Along the way, they make a new friend, a hawksbill sea turtle named Howie. Howie is a kind sea turtle who gives the young fish the guidance they need to get where they're going and stay safe. The three quickly become fast friends and learn that they can trust one another through thick and thin. Howie protects the little fish from predators, and in return they help keep the turtle safe from the dangers of human litter such as plastic bags.

Sammy & Scarlett's Coral Reef Adventure

Sammy & Scarlett's Coral Reef Adventure is a fun book for younger readers by Robert Andrew Provan. I thought it was a wonderful learning tool. I liked seeing the ocean through the eyes of the main characters, Sammy and Scarlett. On their journey, they quickly become friends with others. They learn the dangers of predators and what harm humans create when littering the beautiful habitat. The friends have to find a way to trust and protect one another to survive. Overall, I thought this was a fabulous book to read and one that I believe the smallest of readers will want to read it over and over. Sammy & Scarlett's Coral Reef Adventure is beautifully illustrated by the talented artist, Mary Wentzel. The vivid and colorful pictures were a wonderful addition to the book and helped contribute to the story. Such a perfect way for the youngest of readers to stay focused as to what is going on each page. Sammy & Scarlett's Coral Reef Adventure will be getting a very well deserved five plus stars from me. I highly recommend it for readers who are between the ages of three and eight. I would love to see it on public children’s library shelves and / or in elementary classrooms. I would love to see more Sammy and Scarlett adventures to come. I received a soft cover copy of Robert Andrew Provan’s Sammy & Scarlett's Coral Reef Adventure from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.
