Same Tuesday

11:49. In a house on Garfield in Loveland, Colorado, a night-shift plant worker closes his eyes beside his wife, Ruth. When he opens them he is lying on a gravel bar of the Big Thompson River, barefoot, in a pair of gray shorts. There is no road. No wire, no bridge, no roof. Only the river, the cottonwoods, and the first hogback standing up against an autumn sky.

He lives a whole life there. River peoples who have never heard his name take him in, and he learns their work and their silences. He takes other names. He loves, and leaves, and is left. He keeps a count of winters until the counting stops being a fact and becomes a habit. Somewhere in those years there is a boy, and a cord the boy is learning to tie.

Then the clock on Ruth's side of the bed says 11:49 again, and her hand is still under the pillow.

Nothing happened that night that she can see. So he buys a six-pack of yellow legal pads and writes it all down for her: the cold, the camps, the people he could not save, the man he became. Now Ruth has the pages, and he has to sit across the kitchen table and answer for every one of them.

Same Tuesday is a quiet, unflinching first-person novel about memory, absence, and the daily work of staying.

From Paturious Wilhelm Grey, the author of The Sealed Town.
