Reminiscent of Harry Potter, the story of Sam Whitton will capture your attention from the very start of the book. I mean, any kid brave enough to attack a "bogeyman" with nothing but a shoe is well worth hearing about. Sam is a young boy who never seems to fit in. He's become a third wheel in his foster family, and also has trouble in school due to learning disorders that have placed him in special ed. His whole world changes overnight when his younger sister is attacked by a "bogeyman". Sam tries to intervene and finds himself in dire trouble, when an angel appears and fights the creature to the death. The angel is startled to discover that Sam is able to see and hear him, which "earthers" are not supposed to be able to do. The angel kidnaps Sam and whisks him off to a whole different world above the mortal earth. Over the next several weeks, Sam discovers new friends, foes, family, and a new identity, along with such things as angel construction, crozier (an angel sport), the joys of flying, and the fascinating world of angel politics, history and prophecies. And most importantly, Sam finds a place to belong and that anything is indeed possible. This book is most definitely worth the read and is appropriate for all ages, while still being an interesting and often humourous read for us adults. If you liked the Harry Potter series and/or angel fantasy, this is a must have. I, for one, cannot wait to read the second book. :-)
