Salmagundi
Salmagundi, a series of satirical essays and sketches, originally published in periodical form, showcases the wit and social commentary of Washington Irving, William Irving, and James Kirke Paulding. Penned under pseudonyms, primarily that of Launcelot Langstaff, the writings offer a vibrant portrait of early 19th-century New York society.
Volume 1 of the first series presents a collection of astute observations on manners, customs, and the burgeoning American identity. Irving's signature humor shines through in these pieces, making them both entertaining and insightful. "Salmagundi" remains a valuable resource for understanding the cultural landscape of the early Republic and a testament to the enduring power of satirical writing.
