Book Overview

Saints of the Americas

The Saints of the Americas--spanning from the frozen north of Canada to the southern tip of Argentina--offer children a treasury of heroes who look, speak, and suffer like the people of this hemisphere. Their lives prove that holiness is not a European import but a native plant that has taken deep root in American soil.

These saints are close in time and place. A child in Los Angeles can pray to Jun pero Serra, who walked those same hills in sandals; a child in Chicago can claim Rose of Lima as the first canonized saint born on American ground; a child in Mexico City can walk the hill of Tepeyac where Juan Diego's tilma still hangs. Proximity matters: when holiness happens "here," children realize it can happen to them.

They mirror the racial and cultural mosaic of the Americas. Kateri Tekakwitha, Mohawk maiden, shows Indigenous children that their blood can carry sanctity. Martin de Porres, son of a Spanish knight and a freed Panamanian slave, embodies the mixed heritage of millions today. Juan Diego, an Aztec convert, remind mestizo and immigrant children that the Gospel belongs to every tongue and tribe.

Their stories confront the specific sins and struggles of this continent. Peter Claver spent decades baptizing enslaved Africans dragged to Cartagena's docks; Frances Xavier Cabrini crossed oceans to serve orphans and immigrants rejected by "respectable" society. They teach children that justice, mercy, and welcome are not modern inventions but ancient demands lived out on these shores.

Finally, the martyrs of the Americas--Isaac Jogues and the North American Martyrs tomahawked in the forests of New York and Canada, scar Romero shot at the altar in San Salvador, the Jesuit priests of El Salvador dragged from their beds in 1989--show children that following Christ can still cost everything, even today, even close to home.

To teach children the Saints of the Americas is to say: holiness has walked our streets, spoken our languages, and bled on our soil. The path to heaven runs straight through this continent, and it is wide enough for every child who chooses to walk it.

Excellent Stories

Well written, interesting and enough historical facts to be edifying. This provides solid insights into Catholic contributions to America by lesser known Catholics. Good for ages 5-10 or 12.
